This project will upgrade and enhance crosswalk safety at 13 locations around the city. Improvements will include island medians, curb extensions and push-button signals with flashing lights at the crosswalks. These Vision Zero safety improvements will reduce car speeds and increase pedestrian visibility at crossings.
Several crosswalk locations are on the Vision Zero Columbus High Injury Network (HIN) due to the number of serious or fatal crashes, and/or crashes involving vulnerable road users like people walking, biking or on a motorcycle.
Several crosswalks are also in a Vision Zero Communities of Interest (COI) area. Residents in Communities of Interest may have fewer choices about how, when and where they travel, putting them at higher risk as they move around. Extra investment in roadway and other transportation safety improvements may be needed to enhance safety.
Locations included in Phase 1 are as follows, with HIN and COI denoted where applicable:
E Livingston Ave at Kennedy Dr – on HIN
E Livingston Ave at Elderwood Ave and Vilardo Ln – on HIN, in COI
S Champion Ave at Thurman Ave – in COI
Indianola Ave at Chittenden Ave – on HIN
Parsons Ave at E Moler St – on HIN
Lazelle Road at Seattle Avenue
S High St at W Hinman Ave – on HIN
