Livingston Avenue and Courtright Road Test Project - Right Turn Lane Closure

A 2022 ODOT safety study of the high-crash intersection at Courtright Road and E Livingston Avenue found that 46% of all crashes at this location resulted in injury, nearly double the state average of 25%. As a result, this location was selected for a "quick build" test project to reduce the frequency and severity of left-turn and rear-end crashes. The materials and traffic control tools used in test projects allow for design and installation of roadway safety projects to occur sooner than new infrastructure construction takes.

This project will install water barriers along E Livingston Ave to close the right-hand turn lane leading up to the intersection at Courtright Rd. Narrowing the roadway will reduce speeding and erratic driver behavior.

The test project will be evaluated through before-and-after speed data, field observations, crash monitoring, pedestrian behavior assessments and user feedback. Results will determine whether lanes should be reconfigured or other safety improvements should be implemented.

This project is located on the Vision Zero Columbus High Injury Network and has been identified as a Vision Zero Priority Intersection due to the number of serious or fatal crashes, and/or crashes involving vulnerable road users like people walking, biking or on a motorcycle.

It is also located in a Vision Zero Communities of Interest area. Residents in Communities of Interest may have fewer choices about how, when and where they travel, putting them at higher risk as they move around. Extra investment in roadway and other transportation safety improvements may be needed to enhance safety.
