Phase 1 of this project will make safety improvements within the King-Lincoln Bronzeville neighborhood, on Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard from Hamilton Avenue to St. Clair Avenue and Mount Vernon Avenue from St. Clair Avenue to Champion Avenue. Enhancements will include Vision Zero safety elements such as improved sidewalks and curbs, protected bike lanes, bus islands, curb extensions or “bump outs,” which reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians and create a visual narrowing of the street. These Vision Zero safety improvements are designed to slow driver speeds, increase visibility of people walking and biking and separate these vulnerable road users from vehicle traffic.

This project is located on the Vision Zero Columbus High Injury Network due to the number of serious or fatal crashes, and/or crashes involving vulnerable road users like people walking, biking or on a motorcycle.

It is also located in a Vision Zero Communities of Interest area. Residents in Communities of Interest may have fewer choices about how, when and where they travel, putting them at higher risk as they move around. Extra investment in roadway and other transportation safety improvements may be needed to enhance safety.
