Tools to Implement and Test Pilot Projects
An ODOT reimbursable grant awarded to the Department of Public Service is funding a “quick build” toolkit with various materials and traffic control tools for use in designing and installing roadway safety projects sooner than new infrastructure construction takes.
Use of the toolkit is focused on implementing improvements that support safe walking and biking and slower speeds by drivers.
These pilot projects allow the city to monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the temporary tools before future permanent improvements are finalized and constructed. Tools used in these projects, which stay in place for up to one year, can be removed or adjusted as needed based on evaluation and community feedback during the pilot. The toolkit includes bike and pedestrian counters to help evaluate pilot projects.
Marked curb extensions to shorten pedestrian crossing distance
Traffic calming to reduce driver speeds
Materials
Toolkit temporary materials include:
Paint and pavement markings
Water-filled barricades, traffic cones and curb
Traffic control signage
Various reflective posts and other bike lane separators
Traffic calming materials
Project Examples
New all-way STOP signs, painted curb bump-outs with plastic barriers and striped crosswalks installed at the intersection of Mt Vernon Avenue and N Champion Avenue
Water barriers closed a lane on E Broad Street
Rubber medians and curb and updated striping installed on Thurman Avenue
New all-way STOP signs, painted curb bump-outs with plastic barriers and refreshed pavement markings installed along Champion Avenue and Ohio Avenue
