The intersection at Summit Street and 4th Avenue experiences a high volume of serious injury crashes and crashes involving vulnerable road users like people walking, biking or on a motorcycle. As a result, this location was selected for a "quick build" test project to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes. The materials and traffic control tools used in test projects allow for design and installation of roadway safety projects to occur sooner than new infrastructure construction takes.

This project will add crosswalks, install painted curb extensions with reflective plastic bollards, and add striping to the no-parking zones leading up to the intersection. These improvements will reduce speeding and erratic driver behavior and improve pedestrian comfort and safety.

The test project will be evaluated through before-and-after speed data, field observations, crash monitoring, pedestrian behavior assessments and user feedback. Results will determine whether lanes should be reconfigured or other safety improvements should be implemented.

This project is located on the Vision Zero Columbus High Injury Network due to the number of serious or fatal crashes, and/or crashes involving vulnerable road users.
