This is the first phase of the E Broad St .rehabilitation project, from I-270 to Outerbelt St., is reconstructing the corridor with new through and turn lanes for safer traffic flow and to reduce crashes. Sidewalk will be constructed along one side of the corridor and a shared-use path along the opposite side for safe and connected walking and biking. Improvements will also be made at the streets intersecting with E. Broad St. within the Phase 1 projects limits. Other planned improvements include upgraded traffic signals with backplates and pedestrian pedestals to activate the “Walk” symbol for the crosswalks. Signal interconnect conduit, street lighting and street trees will also be installed. Stormwater drainage improvements will be made where necessary.

These safety improvements are designed to slow driver speeds, better manage traffic flow, increase visibility of people walking and biking and separate these vulnerable road users from vehicle traffic.

The E Broad St rehabilitation project is on the Vision Zero Columbus High Injury Network due to the number of serious or fatal crashes, and/or crashes involving vulnerable road users like people walking, biking or on a motorcycle.

    Beginning Sunday evening Sept. 13, westbound traffic on E. Broad St. in the project area will be shifted to new and resurfaced lanes. Two westbound lanes will be maintained along with dedicated left turn lanes, while right turn lanes will be unavailable temporarily as roadway milling and paving continues.

    Project crews will continue to mill and pave E. Broad between eastbound traffic using the existing lanes and the westbound traffic until new pavement width is sufficient to shift the eastbound traffic to it. Right turns will not have dedicated lanes temporarily during this milling and paving.

    Full milling and paving of E. Broad St in this project phase is expected to take approximately 5 weeks, weather dependent, and will include crews adjusting signage and traffic signal heads and installing temporary pavement markings.

    Drivers should expect delays and watch for crews in the construction zone while this work progresses. The project team will monitor the area and address maintenance of traffic concerns as needed.
